Tough start to regional tourney for two local teams

Thursday, February 25, 2010
Wednesday's opening round of the 2A North Regional Tournament at Midland were not kind for the local community teams, as both the Rector boys and Marmaduke girls were dismissed in the single elimination event.

The Cougars ran into a talented Melbourne squad which was fresh off winning the 2A-2 district title. Rector fell short in the meeting, 64-41.

Tyler Kirklin and Brandon Stevens led Rector's offense with 13 points each.

The Lady Greyhounds were downed in their game with 2A-2 fourth seed Cotter, 38-35.

A missed opportunity from the line late in the game came back to haunt Marmaduke, as Cotter was able to pull ahead in the final minutes.

Michelle Greaney led the Lady 'Hounds in points, netting 22 on the night.

Additional coverage of the local teams will be featured in next week's edition of the Democrat.

Congratulations to the Cougar's Sr. High boys who had a great opening year under new head coach Matt Mills. I for one believe that Matt will lead us back to our former glory in the next few years. It wouldn't surprise me if Matt became one of the top coaches in the state in the future due to his character, work ethic, as well as his excellent knowledge of what it really takes to play the game. I hope our boys will pay the price of working hard for him so that Rector will shine once again in basketball in the near future. We're rooting for the Blackcats, OH! I mean the Cougars! HA!
