As expected, Rector's Lady Cougars came through with a solid performance to dispatch Marked Tree, 61-39, in first round action Monday night in the annual NEA Invitational Tournament at Jonesboro.

After a somewhat sluggish start, Rector rolled off 17 straight points to move ahead 20-4 late in the first quarter. Keys to the big first quarter for the Lady Cougars were two three-pointers by Chelsea Drope and one each by Stephanie Dement and Rebecca Dodd.

Rector continued to dominate play in the second quarter, easing to a 36-15 margin at intermission.

Marked Tree, which had lost by a wide margin to the Lady Cougars in a recent game at Rector, came out playing better in the third period and and outscored the favored team 6-1 over the first couple of minutes, closing the gap to 37-21.

But Rector recovered quickly and ran off nine straight points to put the game away at 46-21.

Reserves saw a lot of action down the stretch as the Lady Cougars moved to the 22-point win, setting up a matchup with Buffalo Island Central at 6 p.m. Wednesday (today).

"I thought we did what we needed to do," Rector coach Mark Manchester said. "We certainly didn't play the best game we have all year, but we played well enough to move on and play another day.

"We had two good runs in the first half and another in the second half...Marked Tree played hard and out-hustled us a little bit at times. We'll have to play better Wednesday."

"Allison (Harmon) had a good game defensively and Chelsea (Drope) shot the ball pretty well. Rhoda (Clausen) also made some good plays for us."

Drope led Rector with 20 points, including four treys. Joining her in double figures were Duncan with 15 and Clausen with 10. Also scoring were Dement 7, Dodd 4, Kelsey Winn 2, Jessie Scott 2 and Amanda Bradford 2. Amelia Stacy led the Lady Indians with 21.

Rector moved to 9-5 with the win.
