The creative young man, who grandmother Rita Dortch says "has a head full of stories," writes every day, whether in his journal or creating new worlds on paper which may one day serve to delight a whole new generation of young readers.
Joseph, the son of Kenneth and Lisa Hargrave of Rector, attributes his interest in writing to his passion for reading.
"It kind of goes together," Joseph said of his fondness for reading, as well as creating his own stories. "If you enjoy reading a lot, then it makes sense that you're also interested in writing."
A fan of fiction, Joseph is particularly fond of the works of Christopher Paolini, whose works such as the "Eragon" fantasy series have found an audience in nearly every age range.
While he has gathered a large collection of his own, Joseph also is a frequent visitor of the Rector Public Library.
"I think our library is very important," he says. "It gives people access to a lot of different books which would be impossible to have on your own. The library makes it easy for people to find something to read. It's very easy to get a library card, and once you do, you have a wide selection of books to choose from."
Jospeh was the youngest person to attend the recent Writers' Retreat held at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Education Center in Piggott. While at the retreat, Joseph was able to share his own works with other local writers, as well as receive helpful instruction and encouragement. His works from the retreat, as well as those of the other 11 who attended, were compiled into the collection "The Works Writers Create."
"I really enjoyed the Writers' Retreat," Joseph said. "Everybody there was really friendly. I would encourage everyone to go there at least once. I learned a lot of things to help me with my writing."
While Joseph enjoys writing, he may seek a career in a different field.
He adds, however, that the importance of good writing skills is immeasurable.
"I want to go to college and then some type of professional school. I've been thinking about pharmacy school. If you do get a good job, you're going to need to be able to write to be successful at it."
Regardless of what career he chooses, if Joseph meets the challenges involved with the same passion he uses in his approach to writing, he very likely will find success.
In his free time, Joseph enjoys spending time outdoors. He and his father are avid campers who both enjoy the scenic beauty of nature.
