Windows and doors for the site have been constructed by Richard Caldwell of Piggott. They have been built to accurately reproduce the originals. The doors and windows were a priority, to help keep the elements from damaging the rest of the structure.
Painting of the building soon will begin with Steve Spicer undertaking the task. The focus currently is on the interior and trim. Construction soon will begin on the restroom and office areas.
The city is working with Main Street Arkansas representatives in completing the visitor center project.
Through a partnership with the Experience Works program, the city has retained the services of Tom Diddle. With the Experience Works program, Diddle will be employed at the office through no expense to the city. A Vietnam veteran, he also has expressed interest in working with the committee to establish the planned veterans memorial, which will be located near the center.
"We're very excited about the progress being made to the center and the impact it will have on the City of Rector once it's completed," said Mayor Ron Kemp.
Kemp said the center will meet a need the city has had for some time, offering visitors, as well as those new to town, a chance to learn more about the city's history and what it has to offer.
The project had long been considered, with plans for the center completed in December 2008.
Because the site was once the city jail and has been recognized for its historic value, the project also serves to restore a valuable part of Rector's past.

It is a great shame the old depot was torn down.
