Failed harvest

Thursday, September 24, 2009
We go to press on the very day of autumnal equinox, when the earth glows with bright sun pouring its spectrum of all the colors of nature to paint the falling leaves. We are awakened by the dawn and watch the lingering sunset slowly diverge and the very time of day gets us confused when, a few weeks down the road we change our clocks back to Central Standard Time. Folks will be early or late when they forget the littler reminder "spring ahead, fall back"....or get it wrong.

Farmers will be busy harvesting crops and getting them ready for market, barn or gin. The farmers' friends and family will agonize with them at every day when rain is either withheld or poured our way too liberally to bring the hateful puddles and draining ditches running full. It will again be Fair time when we may all gather for an evening of fun and homespun play. School kids will have once more begun to adapt to the demands of the learning process in school and playground...Fall at last!

The political season started hopefully in January, when a new and untried president prepared the legislative soil for the planting of ideas -- He ranked his major crops for the USA people as (1) Health Care Revision to provide affordable insurance for those who are uninsured without busting the budget or adding a dime to the deficit. The plan suffered from too many authors, by the poison of bickering and hate talk, and failure of the two parties to work together. We are at impasse now, but it looks as if the congress is making some bipartisan try to bring it back for early fall harvest. We'll see.

Mattes make it look as if the recession were turning about -- the markets and Wall Street concerns are more favorable, and if it were not for the huge unemployment figures we might do some rejoicing. The world looks good to the optimist -- myself included. Life is good and every golden day is a gift from the Almighty.
