Marmaduke's Ray Taylor will have the opportunity to further his education while playing the game he loves. The two-time all-conference selection signed with the Crowley's Ridge College Pioneers during a ceremony held at the college's library in Paragould last Wednesday.

The versatile infielder worked out at shortstop and third base for coach Paul McFadden's Pioneers on May 15. He may also be utilized in the outfield and on the mound.

"He can help us in several different ways," McFadden said. "He's got the kind of skill set that will let him play a number of positions for us. He's a versatile kid. I think he is one of those guys that can come in as a freshman and help us out quickly."

As a senior, Taylor hit .354 for the 'Hounds with 24 RBIs, 13 stolen bases and 29 runs scored. He also had a 2-2 record as a pitcher.

"I'm glad to get to take the next step," Taylor said. "I get to keep playing baseball. It's been a part of my life so long, I'd hate to have to quit now."

Having played at every level of youth baseball, Taylor says he is excited at the challenge lying ahead.

"At this level, everybody out there is good. It's going to be tough, but I also think it'll be a lot of fun."

CRC just finished their first season as a four-year college. As part of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), CRC will play approximately 40 games with other Christian schools of similar size. This schedule provides fans with a fun, competitive game, while still showcasing top-tier talent.

While CRC had a tough 4-24 season in 2009, McFadden feels like his squad has the capability to bounce back strong next year.

"This will be our first year to play a schedule completely made up of four-year schools. I think we've got the talent to go out there and play with the teams on our schedule. I'm looking forward to being competitive in the NCCAA."

Taylor was joined at the signing by his parents Mike and Nahoko, sister Lily and MHS superintendent Tim Gardner.

Taylor says the close proximity of CRC was a big factor in his decision.

"I get to stay close to home and keep playing. That means a lot to me. My family has always supported me. My dad has worked with me my whole life and taught me a lot about the game. To know that they can still come watch me play is great."

Taylor also thanked all his coaches through the years, including coaches Larry Willis and Bill Muse of Marmaduke.

"If I didn't get to play at Marmaduke, then I probably wouldn't be in this program right now."

Gardner expressed the entire Marmaduke School District's joy for their former student.

"Ray is an outstanding person," Gardner said. "CRC is not only getting a very good player, they're getting a quality human being who will be a credit to their school. We at Marmaduke are very proud of him."
