Charles Douglas Matheny

Charles Douglas Matheny, 75, of California, Mo., a native of Boydsville, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, Mo.

He was born April 3, 1933, in Boydsville, the oldest son of Orville Ray and Evelyn Faye Simpson Matheny, who preceded him in death.

He was married Oct. 28, 1955, to Della Ilene Moore, who survives. He was a lifelong educator, working as a high school teacher and guidance counselor at both Leadwood, Mo., and California R-1 High School from 1957 until his retirement in 1995.

He graduated from Rector High School in 1951. In 1957 he received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree at Arkansas State College in Jonesboro. He received a Master of Education degree in 1961 from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

He served on active duty during the Korean War in the United States Marine Corps and Arkansas Army National Guard from 1951 to 1961. He was an active member in the California Chapter of Eastern Star, a 50-year member of the California Masonic Lodge #183, VFW Post #1003 and other various organizations over the years.

Other survivors include one son, Dan Matheny and his wife Linda of Arnold, Mo.; two daughters, Cindy Hamlin and her husband, Kevin, of Cedar Park, Texas, and Faith Anderson of California, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Jessalyn Hamlin, Jacob Hamlin, Becky Anderson, Warren Anderson, Melissa Tubbs, Greg Newton and Erik Newton; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Tom Matheny and his wife Helen of Sunset Hills, Mo.; one sister, Mary Jo Brown and her husband Graham of Kirkwood, Mo., and many loving aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by one son, Timothy Durward Matheny in 2006, and one grandson, Matthew Douglas Anderson in 1999.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services. Rev. Linda Pagel officiated. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery in California, Mo.,with full military honors.
