Legacy in Tatters

Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Weighted down with a 72 percent disapproval rating from the American people, President Bush tries to establish something that might represent the "Bush legacy." During these waning months of his term in office he has made akward and likely futile tries to settle some of the chaos his administration has wreaked upon the people of Israel and the mid-east Muslim states. He addressed the Knessett by making a political speech against one of the opposite party seeking his job, calling Senator Obama an "appeaser," who would bring comfort to America's enemies by talking to them, and likened his actions to those of Neville Chamberlain conferring with Hitler in 1938. He asked Saudi Arabia to help us with the current oil gouge by OPEC, and those staunch allies refused any significant relief. He is now in Egypt seeking peaceful resolution of their international strife. To date, more than five years of unremitting war in Iraq, he has yet to admit to, any error of policy or of judgment in the prosecution of this futile fracas. He has rattled the saber so often against Iran we don't wonder when its half-mad president sends his forces to join America's enemies in Iraq to kill American troops there. He has consistently refused to enter tough or gentle diplomacy, apparently believing it is better to try to scare someone into submission. Notable exceptions must be mentioned -- successful dialogues with Libya and North Korea.

He has lost touch with the people who gave him two terms. To L. Paul Bremer, who mismanaged the affairs in Iraq right after our invasion so the entire place is a wreck, with millions of Iraqi fleeing the country, he gave the Medal of Freedom. The same decoration went to George Tenet, former head of the CIA, who presented such faulty intelligence. To the head of FEMA which fouled up recovery efforts after Katrina in New Orleans: "Heckuva job, Brownie!" He has become the malaprop president to foreign dignitaries from Britain's queen to the Holy Father on his recent visit. There appears to be no depth there in the personality of the little man too big for his britches, too small for the biggest job on earth. Historians are usually unforgiving, and allow no spin in their rendition of what happened to us all in the years 2001-2009. Bush and Cheney, save your breath in your final statements -- only three of us out of ten will believe you anyhow.

We offer a fervent hope his successor -- from either party -- will honor our selection by telling us the truth and by giving us an unbiased communication which must become a two-way street. When you find you have earned our trust, you can be certain that we will follow you to hell and back. Americans always have liked "Hail To The chief!"
