Jewell Doyne Hayes

Jewell Doyne Hayes lost his battle with cancer Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at the age of 62.

He was born Sept. 2, 1943, in Rector to the late Ira and Mozell Smith Hayes.

He enlisted in the United States Army in 1964. In addition to his basic training, he also completed Airborn School, Officer Candidate School and Army Flight School.

As a veteran of the Viet Nam war, his service and actions earned him a Silver Star, Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, nine Air Medals, Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Medal, Army Overseas Medal, Viet Nam Cross of Gallantry, Viet Nam Service Medal, Airborne Wings and Army Aviator Wings.

During his time in the Army, he served with the 1st Infantry Division, the 9th Infantry Division, the 2/54 Field Artillery Division, the 2nd and 3rd Rangers, 75th Ranger Regiment and the 5th Special Forces Group. Upon returning to the states, he finished his Army obligation as an OCS instructor.

He then went on to earn an MBA at the University of Arkansas. He lived and worked around Sedgwick for almost 30 years. He was a member of the Main Street Church of Christ in Walnut Ridge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shelia Ann Hayes Bowman.

He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, leaving behind his wife of 40 years, Dana Wimberley Hayes; two children, Joel Hayes and wife Kristie of Rector and Jana Hayes Schimming and husband Wade of Peach Orchard; two grandchildren, Jacob Hayes and Audrey Schimming; one brother, Thomas Hayes of Paragould; six nieces and nephews, and a host of family and friends who will miss him.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at the Fifth and Pine Church of Christ in Rector with Bro. Ken Roden and Rob Combs officiating. Burial was in Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector with Mitchell Funeral Home of Rector in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that memorials be given to the Paragould Children's Home, Fifth and Pine Church of Christ Building Fund or Disabled American Veterans.
