Former Clay County Sheriff Robert Leon Beaton Sr. died Thursday, Oct. 15, at Greene Acres Nursing Home at age 89. He was born Nov. 14, 1919, on Panther Island in the Bard community. Doyne Reed Ward was born April 21, 1927, at Bee Branch, to the late Sam and Vannie Ward. He was a World War II Navy veteran having served on the U.S.S. Columbia. He was a member of the Blooming Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He loved to deer hunt, coon hunt, crappie fish and watch his great-grandchildren play ball.
