Where Next--Day Care? Nursing Homes?Posted Thursday, May 14, 2009, at 12:16 AM
By Charlie Crow
May 14, 2009 Ah, the thought of the smell of the black powder smoke And the stand in the street at the turn of a joke... "Last Gunfighter Ballad," by Guy Clark Federal legislation allowing guns in national parks has passed the Senate. Frankly, it drew me up short. I learned a long time ago not to be surprised by any goofy proposition that oozes out of the congressional swamp, so when I saw it had been sponsored by a bloviating senator from Oklahoma, I took it in stride. However, it was indeed a disappointment to see both Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor--so-called "moderate" senators from Arkansas--had bought into the idea. To make matters worse, because this bill is actually a rider on President Obama's priority legislation to limit credit card companies' ability to indiscriminately jack up their interest rates, it would be relatively safe from veto if the House of Representatives concurs. This one defies common sense. Why would anyone want to make the national parks more dangerous than they already are? It should be noted that neither the Department of the Interior nor the National Park Service asked for this legislation. What's more, the park rangers are adamantly opposed to it. The rangers, just like most professional law enforcement officers and policemen, for some strange reason don't like having to face down a disorderly drunk or rowdy speeder who is carrying a loaded sidearm. It is beyond me why no legislature bothers to ask the people who have to keep order in our streets and enforce domestic tranquility why they favor controlling personal weapons as well as the outright banning of assault rifles and similar weapons designed for offensive warfare. But after all, what do they know? A number of states, Arkansas included, allow gun owners to carry a concealed weapon. Some allow them in bars and other public gathering places. I was horrified earlier this year to read of the serious proposal introduced in the Arkansas General Assembly that would have allowed concealed handguns in church services. It got a lot of support, believe it or not, from some preachers, as well as from some of their congregants, before it died in committee. From the early days of the Slow Train Through Arkansas jokes, and the corn pone humor of radio personalities Bob Burns, Lum and Abner, Arkansas has had a reputation--earned as often as unearned--for being a bit backward. Such mythical lore is damaging enough without adding factual reinforcement. It would seem that there is a shortage of political will to do anything that would gain the disfavor of that bunch of bullies, the National Rifle Association. The NRA has mastered the art of relentless attempts to crush any opponent who does not swear fealty to the Gun God. NRA has shamelessly promoted its own narrow views of the so-called "right to bear arms" referred to in the Second Amendment to the Constitution. Most people never even notice the language that links the possession of arms to the right of the people to have a "well-regulated militia." My dictionary defines a "militia" as a part of the organized armed forces of a country liable to call only in emergency, or a body of citizens organized for military service. In the United States, that means the National Guard or the Reserves. It is not, I repeat, not intended to sanction armed bands of vigilantes, self-appointed posses or radical right-wingnut crazies like the Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh to take the law into their own hands. What's that? You keep your gun for hunting and self-defense? Fine. Do you need it in church or at the grocery store? Has the country become that dangerous? Perhaps in some places, but for most of this land, I think not. Ah, but do I hear you saying that if things get too bad you just might want to join with your neighbors and take back your country from those dangerous tax-and-spend socialistic atheists in Washington? Careful there, Dude--we fought a war over that question and the rebels lost. Now lest you think this is a screed against owning a gun, it most certainly is not. There is absolutely nothing wrong with individuals having guns for hunting, target shooting or even self-defense, as long as they have been adequately trained on how to use them, properly maintain them and secure them from access by children or other unauthorized personnel, and, as long as every gun and its ballistics pattern are registered... Americans love their cars and their guns, no matter how dangerous they are. Soon we may just get guns in all the parks, guns in the churches, guns in the nightclubs, and maybe guns in nursing homes and day care centers. I hope if this happens that you will feel safer. Speaking for myself, as one who has no intention of carrying a weapon, concealed or otherwise, I will feel far less so. good reading charlie. although i'm a rootn' tootn' texas guy these days.... it's not the good guys with guns that scare me, it's the bad guys with guns that do. my youngest son is a dallas policeman, and we talk about this often. if only it was a perfect world!
on a lighter note, i thought of you tonite. i went to see bruce robison. gotta love that guy clark also. what a couple of great texas songwriters they are huh? i'm sure you and i are the only ones that have any idea what i'm talking about.
take care
rjb
arebyrd,
Bruce Robison is one of my favorites--I especially admire his "Can't Get There From Here." There is a long list of incredibly gifted singer/songwriters who hail from Texas. Most of them have not been corrupted by the more commercial Nashville publishers who are staffed with people who care less about the music and more about the bottom line. My list includes, of course, Guy Clark and Bruce Robison, as well as Townes Van Zandt, Billy Joe Shaver, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Eley,Willie Nelson, Tompall Glazer, Waylon Jennings, Janis Joplin, Mac Davis and new artists like Austin Cunningham and Jack Ingram.
As for the comment on your policeman son, I am appalled at our leaders' lack of concern for the safety of those who put their lives on the line every day to keep our streets and homes safe. Laws like the one I wrote about only make their jobs more difficult.
Charlie
My son Tim is a police officer in Fort Myers Fl. and that is a war zone as far as crime goes. So yes I do worried about him each day he is out there. Drugs and guns are killing our young people here. Very sad and crazy world....
Charlie,
It's always interesting to hear from your side of the aisle. To answer the primary argument of your newest rant I would refer you to what is known as the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution -- "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Of course, our Founding Fathers weren't as wise as our present television generation that is spoon fed trash on a daily basis.
On a lighter note and by way of conciliation I am impressed in the last couple of days with President Obama's retraction. He has now sided with the Bush administration's policy to NOT release photos of our interrogation procedures due to the irrevocable harm it would do to the security of the country. He may have done that to make up for the release of Air Force 1 photos flying in front of an approaching F-16 a mere thousand feet above the terrified city of New York.
Furthermore, he is now backing away from his desire to shut down GITMO. I guess he decided a couple of hundred terrorists running around with guns on our streets would not be politically expedient, especially since the good guys shouldn't have guns. Thank God that France was willing to take one of them off our hands - so much for diplomacy. He also requested and received from the democratic led congress, a $96.7 billion bill that includes money for the President's troop buildup in Afghanistan, a strategy only 60 democrats voted against.
I wonder when SNL will begin their skewing of the President due to his incessant desire to sour the rest of the world toward us by way of military aggression? I can't wait for the Academy Awards comments next year. Maybe Barbara Streisand will set the war-monger straight.
On the downside I guess you would say, the President called our current deficit spending "unsustainable," and warned of skyrocketing interest rates for consumers if the U.S. continues to finance government by borrowing from other countries. He went on to say, "We can't keep on just borrowing from China, we have to pay interest on that debt, and that means we are mortgaging our children's future with more and more debt? Oh for the days of Billion dollar deficits instead of Trillions!
Where is Jimmy Carter when you need him?
Roy Hargrave
Good Evening Charlie,
I agree with you that our protectors should be able to provide input on this issue. I agree with Arebyrd that we should be more concerned with the bad guys having the guns. I agree with Sherry that guns are killing our young people.
Roy,
I do not agree or disagree with your first paragraph. As far as your other paragraphs, please be respectful and try to stay on topic.
Mijo
Mijo,
What is worse, "rant" which means to speak in a loud exaggerated manner or "bloviate" which means to speak bombastically? If I had used the word bloviate and Charlie had used the word rant would you be mad at Charlie or me?
Another exercise to prove your apparent sense of fairness. If Charlie's blog had my name under it and my response had Charlie's name under it, who would you be mad at?
"Bias" means preference or distortion of results, and we all have them, including Liberals.

Mijo,
Sorry, I forgot to stay on your point. So, you don't agree with the Founding Fathers? Don't take in personally, its just a question.
RAH
Charlie
You are an honest liberal, I respect you for that.
I carry a gun and even carry it to Church. I hate what society has produced in the lack of respect for the rights and respect of others. I will gladly give up my guns as soon as every "ne're do well" is disarmed. We all have seen that bad people even invade Churches and kill and mame innocent people. I as and elder of a church have the responsibility to see that the membership has a right to worship with some assurance of safety. So does about 25 percent of the members who have CC permits.

To all who aren't uptight:
I thought maybe a little levity might mitigate our present concealed weapons stalemate.
