Labor Day is Almost Here

Posted Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at 11:47 AM

It is the last day of August. Normally at this time I have been complaining about the heat for two months, just hanging on until Labor Day, after which we can usually expect a bit of a cool down. This summer, however, has been unusually pleasant. And I love these cool nights. I've had nothing to whine about at all. Guess I'll have to find a new summer hobby. Now let's all visualize a beautiful, sunny, cool Labor Day!

Yes it is almost here! I am so excited as I always am. I just love Labor Day here in Rector. I am not riding in the parade this year so I will get to watch the whole thing. I hope YHC tapes it again this year. Listen! I can hear the school band practicing now. They will have competition this year from the ASU marching band.

Another Labor Day tradition is the raffling of a quilt by the Women's Club of Rector. I sold raffle tickets at Harps on Saturday and that is always a pleasure. I get to see a lot of people I don't normally see and I always meet a few new ones. One of the first people I met for the first time is Mary Emerline, Jacenda Welch's mother. I'm going to be looking for her at the parade too. And for all of you who passed up the chance to win that beautiful quilt, we will be selling tickets at Harp's next weekend too and again at the picnic. Trust me, you don't want to miss out on that.

I saw Nelda Chadwick too. Her beautiful granddaughter, Jerry Davenport was with her. My goodness she is lovely. Nelda says she spends weekends with her often as Jerry is going to ASU this year.

I guess you heard that Glenna Bookout fell and broke her hip. So sorry to hear that, Glenna, get better fast, okay? There certainly have been a bunch of broken bones lately. We are going to have to start being more careful around here. Ms. Frances Haas is still recuperating nicely. Keep up the good work.

I am sorry to say goodby to Doyne Webb. He and my mother were friends from childhood and he never tired of telling me stories about her I had never heard before. He will be missed.

Pauline Shields is back on Third Street. Glad to have you home, Ms. Pauline.

Congratulations to Ms. Gail Burns! It is wonderful to know you will be recognized for your contribution to Educational Theater. Gail is one of two Drama teachers selected to be admitted to the EdTA Hall of Fame in Anaheim CA Sept 12. She has been an unstoppable force in her mission to find and cultivate young thespians in our school district, a true asset to our community and to the theater community as well.

I had better end this now. I want to remind everyone that food donations are still being accepted for the kitchen on Labor Day. If you want to help serve, I am sure you will be welcomed.

Let me know what goes on with you.! My address is 514 West 3rd St. Phone: (870) 595-3173 and email: porchswing@newwavecomm.net. Thank you so much for all your emails and phone calls. I love hearing from you.

See you on Labor Day!!
