School's Out

Posted Monday, June 1, 2009, at 10:52 PM

The big news this week is: SCHOOL'S OUT! Yes, students and teachers alike are celebrating their freedom. May Fest was a good way to start it out, wasn't it? And sunshine! It has really been good to see the sunshine this week. With all the rain we've had you can almost see the grass grow. I hope it works that way for the crops too. It has been a little warm for my tastes, but then I am a cool weather person and even I haven't been complaining too much lately.

The summer does have such great memories for me. That's about the only time I was here when I was growing up. Hot afternoons were a good excuse to play cards in the shade or get wet by washing the car. The evenings cooled down a little and we gathered here and there for good times. Besides I had come up from the Texas coast where the humidity out distanced the temperature and this was much more tolerable. And there were such wonderful people here. There still are wonderful people here, so I am looking forward to this summer.

I suppose you heard the news about Nathan David Mills and Amy Marie McNabb, Nathan and Amy if we are not being too formal. They got married May 15th. Congratulations you two! If you want to celebrate with them come on out to the community center this Saturday. A reception is being held on Saturday, June 6 at 6:30 pm at the Rector Community Center. All friends and relatives are welcome. Come on, what at fun party that will be.

Carol Stone and her son Doug made the drive up to Rector from Rison Friday so Doug could get together with his old buddies and his nieces and nephews for a while. Living in Japan makes it not so easy for him to come and visit, so this was a rare pleasure. He is planning to come back sometime later this summer though and bring his wife and daughter. I will let you know. By now he is back in Japan and probably back at work, well considering the time change and all.

Pauline Shields is still getting back into the swing of things. She is accepting visitors so drop by and sit a spell.

I do believe I saw Nancy Kemp pushing someone in a stroller the other day. She and Ron are really enjoying their grandchildren. Just look on Facebook if you doubt me.

Jessica Earls has indeed left for Florida. She and Tillie Rose are entertaining Jessica's Father, Jim Blanc before resuming their trip south. Richard can still be found around home, getting the house ready to sell. Oh, pooh! I hate to see them go.

Last week Georgia Sallee had a small gathering to say good-by to Cyndi Corkran. Lark and Steven Sigsby were there and Paul and Cheryl Schwager. Also attending were Jerry Chillcut, Candy Hill, Cathy Louder, Jessie Malin, Lane Wozniak, Reno Smith, Paula Benton, Pastor Bell and Susie. And me. Ron and Nancy Kemp dropped by too as did Meagan Louder. We all had a great time and took lots of pictures for Cyndi to carry with her. We will really miss her around here.

I will leave you now on the brink of your summer vacation time. Go, have fun, stay safe and tell us everything when you get back. Or hang out, have fun, take care of each other and stay safe and tell us how you spend your time this summer. It's a wonderful opportunity we have here. Make it the best summer yet.

Thank you to everyone who shares their stories with me. I really enjoy hearing from you all. My address is 514 West 3rd St. Phone: (870) 595-3173 and email: porchswing@newwavecomm.net. Just two months until the Gaither Event. Get your tickets now.
