A Lovely SnowfallPosted Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at 3:25 PM
Good day, everyone! As I write this I am looking out my window at the remains of our beautiful snow event. Wasn't it great? It's been a long time since we've had so much snow. I spent Saturday watching it fall and Sunday looking at the winter scene that was beyond every window. And throwing a snowball or two at my dogs. The cats were quite unimpressed. What a weird weather month February turned out to be. I hope spring will bring only beautiful surprises.
I had a surprise visit last week from someone you might remember. Melva Ramey and her husband Sam were in town visiting with Melva's cousin Bonnie Brewer. Melva and her husband now live in Loma Linda, CA and have been visiting in St. Louis. They brought Bonnie home from there. They like to keep up with what goes on in Rector like so many who have moved away, and this column is one of their sources. Isn't it nice that Rector has such allure for those who grew up here? And for those of us who only wish we had grown up here. Who knows, maybe someday Melva and Sam will pack up and move back. Barbie Terry is entertaining this week. BK Farley is home from 29 Palms on a pre-deployment leave. On March 5 he and Bobby Terry will drive to Springfield Missouri to pick up his buddy Matt Allen and bring Matt back to Rector to met all of us. I am sure Rector will make him feel welcome. BK and Matt will spend the night on the 5th and then leave for California late on March 6. From there they will be going to Iraq for seven months. Please keep these wonderful young men and their commrads in our prayers. Also, remember Mrs. Ruth Wimberley and all her helpers who keep those "Dad Bags" going to our soldiers. It is wonderful work she is doing. They gather at the community center the first Monday of every month to put the packages together. You can help by contributing money or toiletries and other niceties. You can make your drop offs at most of the local stores and at the community center. It is important that we continue to show our support and appreciation for our troops overseas. Jessica Earls has a baby shower coming up and everyone is invited. You may have gotten an invitation but come celebrate with us even if you didn't. If you did get an invitation some things have changed. The shower will be at the Methodist Church fellowship hall on Saturday, March 7 from 2:00-5:00. By the way, it's a girl. The growl of chainsaws is still everywhere most of the time, and the landscape changes with every cut. But I have also been blessed with the sound of hammer and nails as the garage roof was repaired and the city workers picked up the debris from my yard, so things are moving right along. One group we haven't thanked yet is the insurance adjusters. I know mine has been very attentive and I am sure yours has too. Calamities like our ice storm really put them to the test. Again, I am thankful for all the help from so many people. Thank you everyone, for being who you are. Please let me hear from you. My address is 514 West 3rd St. Phone: (870) 595-3173 and email: porchswing@newwavecomm.net. |
