The Crops are Looking Good!Posted Friday, August 1, 2008, at 11:51 AM
In between my bouts of whining about this heat wave, I have taken a few air conditioned drives here and there. Oh the crops look beautiful, don't they? I really enjoy driving along looking at the different fields as they come together like a beautiful quilt top in all the different shades of green. Simply lovely. I can't wait to see the cotton fields all snowy and ready to pick.
But, you know you don't even have to go out of town to appreciate the farming. There are so many towny's who have gardens and they are all so neat and pretty. What a great reward for the hard work of gardening to create something nice to look at and good to eat too. I want to thank everyone who helped me celebrate my birthday this year. I am still hearing echoes of horns honking. And although I know who put up one of the signs, the creator of the other one is still a mystery! So thank you, whoever you are. Come on 'fess up. I was also treated to a delicious lunch at Strawberry's in Holcomb to celebrate my advancing age. Pauline Shields, Jessie Malin, Marybelle Meredith, Paula Benton, Colleen Graves and Lane Wozniak were all there to enjoy the food and of course to sing. I got a lot of singing too. I missed Barbara Wheatley as she wasn't feeling well that day, but we know she was there in spirit. The Gaither's played to a packed house Saturday, didn't they? What a great performance. Everyone is still talking about it. We even made the ten o'clock news on channel 8. In a good way. General Barker purchased a group of tickets himself that he gave to families of our military in Iraq. That was a great gesture! We can't do enough to show our support for these families. Thank you, General Barker and the whole Helping Hands organization for all you do for our town. (And yours). Speaking of our troops in Iraq, don't forget to contribute to Operation Dad Bags. Those folks are doing a great job and can always use a little more help. Our guys and gals over there love to hear from home. It never hurts to send someone a card or a letter. And it's not too soon to start making welcome home signs for there December homecoming. In case you haven't heard, Gaylan Cope, a former pastor of the First United Methodist Church here, had surgery last week and could really use our positive thoughts. Y'all stop by and say hello to Candy Hill. Yes, she has finally joined the Rector citizenry once again and is now in the "Will I ever get it all put away" phase of her move. Maybe you want to wait a few days before you pop in. Anyway, welcome, Candy! Glad to have you in the neighborhood. I want to say hello to Jane Fennell again. Keep on getting better, Jane. We are all behind you. Jessica Earls says she goes out almost every Sunday for a visit and if anyone wants to ride along just give her a call at Earl's Air Conditioning and Appliance on Main Street. 595-3671. I also want to say hello to my kids and grandkids in San Diego. They sometimes read this on the blog. They like to keep up the news in Rector, so "Hello, Denny, Ruth, Victoria and Nicholas. Hello too to Chris, Jenna and Christina and to Leila. Love to you all! Well, I guess that will wrap it up for this week. Enjoy these last few days of July. Soon it will be August, you know the really hot month. But Labor Day is just around the corner. Please share your goings on with me so I can share with everyone else. My phone number is 595-3173 or you can drop me a note at 514 West 3rd St. My email address is: porchswing@newwavecomm.net. |
Christa is proud to call herself a Rector native having been born here. After living elsewhere, she just couldn't stay away! She has now lived in Rector for over 14 years. During this time, Christa has been very active in the community and is the one to go to for current happenings in the area.
