It's a Hall of a time
Posted Thursday, September 2, at 11:50 AM
I'm looking forward to the Hall of Fame luncheon Saturday.
As with any other organization, I may not always agree with the various RHSSHOF committees, but I certainly appreciate and respect the work they do. Honestly, I wouldn't be as eager to sign up for the pressure or hassle they deal with through their efforts. I always enjoy visiting with the organizers. I look forward to speaking with the out-of-town founders like Lavaughn Robertson, Gary McClure and Dr. Owen Mosley. I like to hear their stories about local sports and athletes, as well as their experiences in life after Rector. They're very interesting gentlemen. I am always delighted to get the opportunity to speak with coach Jess Bucy. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet with coach Bucy these past years. I've enjoyed learning more about his time as a coach, as well as his own personal philosophies. He is one of the most engaging people I've ever had the privilege to meet. Of course, I also enjoy seeing the inductees honored for their contributions to local athletics. We're lucky to have this program. I want to remind everyone to help this program continue its work by supporting events like the luncheon and the golf event, as well as submitting nominations for future classes. Nominations may be filled out online by visiting www.rectorhighschool.com and entering the Hall of Fame section. The site also features information about previous inductees and events.
Sure is hot I believe it was the French existential philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre who said, "Wow, it's really stinking hot out there." I could be wrong, though. That could've been someone else. I digress. At noon today, the board outside Liberty Bank read 100 degrees...
Make football happen There's a school of thought that says Rector should cut its losses and do away with football entirely after failing to field a senior high team for the second time in a decade. While those who feel that way are not always likely to come right up to you on the street and say so, there are a few quiet voices out there encouraging the kids and the school to throw in the towel...
Poor Cleveland If you listen quietly in the still Rector night, you can hear the sounds of the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA franchise sinking all the way from Ohio. After losing their "King", hometown hero LeBron James, to free agency, Cavs fans are jumping off faster than the guys who insured the Titanic...
Make us proud--again As the school year wraps up, I've been recalling memories of the young men and women I've had the opportunity to come to know over the years. There have been times where I couldn't suppress my goofy grin, as well as moments where all I could do was clench my jaw and kick the dirt...
What matters most My nephew Mason asked me to play a round of 'HORSE' following the rains a week or so back. While the soggy conditions made me unwilling to play, I found myself pausing later to think "How much longer will he want to play games with me?" I stopped back by a few days later, with the plan of reminding him the ol' fat uncle can still shoot hoops better than a lot of folks--especially when we take away dribbling, as with .HORSE'--only to learn that he was at baseball practice for the afternoon...
Regionals are all the rage The Cougars and Lady Cougars have both earned the opportunity to extend their seasons by qualifying for their respective regional tournaments. The teams took similar paths to the next round, as both the boys and girls punched their regional tickets by defeating conference foe Riverside to advance. ...
Hitting the Hardwood It's time for basketball! Get you popcorn and grab a courtside seat, as another exciting year of Cougar and Lady Cougar basketball is set to begin. For each of the past few seasons, I've still found myself amazed at how outstanding a gym we have here in Rector. Even though I've been to countless games since the gym was built, it still impresses me each time I arrive for a contest...
Playing in the mud I'm tired of all this rain. As someone who normally enoys rainy days, I've had more than my fill of the wet weather. I fear that I'll soon be dreaming of rain. The soggy grass and ever-present mud has been a staple for the Cougar football teams for most of the season. Last week, a senior high player told me his cleats had not been dry since week two...
Remember: It's supposed to be fun First of all, I apologize for the shameless cliché of a headline. Of course, I think we would all do well to remember there's nearly always some truth behind each time-worn ideal or, in this case, sports cliché. This particular headline is geared toward those most revered of youth athletic staples: summer baseball and softball...
No dust to settle Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the number of rainy days increases each spring. While I'm typically fond of rain personally, I find myself loathing it during the high school softball and baseball seasons. I can almost guarantee at the start of each season the blue and white squads will not play around half of their scheduled games. If they do manage to play the games, then about half of the dates will be changed...
An enormous effort Though the Cougars didn't come home with a win from Tuesday night's second round district tournament game with Riverside, they have absolutely no reason to hang their heads in defeat. The young men from Rector can look their fans right in the eyes with both parties fully aware that the Cougars gave us all their very best. ...
Golf: The Truth Tennyson said a young man's fancy turns to love during spring. Many of us a little bit older than his targeted age group find our summer fancies heading toward a different course: Golf. For many of us, golf is a treasured pastime. If time spent fishing doesn't take away from one's allotted lifecycle, then surely golf must fall into a similar category...
Go forth, young men, and prosper The Cougar baseball team left for Pine Bluff today (Thursday) for their first round state tournament game. Rector will be facing Dierks, the number two seed from the south region, at 2:30 p.m. Friday. If Rector wins, they'll face either Poyen or Hermitage at noon on Saturday...
