Remember: It's supposed to be fun
Posted Thursday, April 16, at 2:20 PM
First of all, I apologize for the shameless cliché of a headline. Of course, I think we would all do well to remember there's nearly always some truth behind each time-worn ideal or, in this case, sports cliché.

This particular headline is geared toward those most revered of youth athletic staples: summer baseball and softball.

One of the biggest gripes I have in the entire world (What can I say? I try very hard to keep my life simple.) is when adults ruin things for children. Before things take too much of a negative turn, I want to point out how this is not the norm, but more of an exception. Especially in our community, a very high percentage of youth sports is about offering a healthy, fun activity for children to take part in and enjoy during the summer months. Basically, we're pretty good at getting it right.

Still, I'd like to remind everyone who plans on attending any of these games that no matter what, the point is to provide something beneficial to the young players. We're all rooting FOR someone. There shouldn't be any rooting AGAINST the other players. These are children out there and we need to act accordingly. Personally, I enjoy seeing all the children playing. I'd prefer it if every one of the tiny athletes got a hit and made a play in the field.

Typically, the biggest complaints come from the varied personalities of the spectators. As adults, we all have the responsibility to make the effort to present the best examples we can for the youth in our community.

No dust to settle

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the number of rainy days increases each spring. While I'm typically fond of rain personally, I find myself loathing it during the high school softball and baseball seasons. I can almost guarantee at the start of each season the blue and white squads will not play around half of their scheduled games. If they do manage to play the games, then about half of the dates will be changed...

An enormous effort

Though the Cougars didn't come home with a win from Tuesday night's second round district tournament game with Riverside, they have absolutely no reason to hang their heads in defeat. The young men from Rector can look their fans right in the eyes with both parties fully aware that the Cougars gave us all their very best. ...

Golf: The Truth
Posted Thursday, June 5, at 12:57 PM

Tennyson said a young man's fancy turns to love during spring. Many of us a little bit older than his targeted age group find our summer fancies heading toward a different course: Golf. For many of us, golf is a treasured pastime. If time spent fishing doesn't take away from one's allotted lifecycle, then surely golf must fall into a similar category...

Go forth, young men, and prosper

The Cougar baseball team left for Pine Bluff today (Thursday) for their first round state tournament game. Rector will be facing Dierks, the number two seed from the south region, at 2:30 p.m. Friday. If Rector wins, they'll face either Poyen or Hermitage at noon on Saturday...
