A great Labor DayPosted Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at 6:14 PM
The results are in and by all accounts it was another great Labor Day weekend in Rector.
Even in a difficult economy, the revenue for the Labor Day Picnic exceeded last year. All those who volunteered their time to make the picnic a success are to be commended. Rector is known as a community of volunteers and it is never more apparent than on Labor Day weekend. As everyone familiar with Rector knows, the "Picnic" has involved into a full weekend of activities with something for everyone. It puts Rector "on the map" throughout the region during this special time of year. All those we have talked to were especially pleased with the parade this year, noting the large number of floats and other entries and the exciting presence of the Arkansas State University Band. The band provided a great deal of sound and color to the parade and also proved to be a hit with several numbers at the park grounds. Another "big hit" was Demetra Shultz as the parade Grand Marshal. She is a delightful person and she clearly had a lot of fun in the role and was a tremendous ambassador for Rector throughout the day. Of course, the weather cooperated throughout the weekend, which helped make it all possible. What a great time to be in Rector!! Ron Kemp and his wife Nancy have published the Clay County Democrat since 1977. They are excited about the new possibilities with the website and the opportunity to give a daily approach to "late-breaking" events in a weekly newspaper operation. Kemp has spent his entire career in the newspaper business and served as president of the Arkansas Press Association in 1993. The Kemps' daughter, Ashley Wimberley, has continued the family tradition, currently serving as director of marketing at the APA office in Little Rock.

It is indeed a great time to be in Rector. My heart absolutely swells when I am in the thick of the picnic weekend. For the first time in many years the sound of the fire sirens marking the beginning of the parade did not bring tears to my eyes. This year they unlocked the joy in my heart and let it tumble free. Thank you - EVERYONE who participated in any way in making this event come to life.
