Landmark being renovated

I wonder how many people over the years have driven down Main Street in Rector and taken an admiring look at the unusual old building located along the way -- the historic city jail structure.
According to local historian Pauline Crockett, the structure was built in about 1915 and also housed the water department office.
It is a very unique building that has the potential to be a real landmark in Rector.
The Hamilton-Crockett-Jernigan families were kind enough to donate the building to the city and the plan is to develop it into a community development office and visitor center. It is envisioned that the center will become a real focal point for the community.
The city received notice this week that a $25,000 state grant has been received to begin renovation of the structure. The idea is to make the building suitable for an office and visitor center, with the center providing a glimpse into the fascinating history of the community. At the same time, the idea also is retain the historic significance and style of the building.
Community development director Cyndi Corkran is extremely excited about the project, not only because she will have her office there, but also because she has a tremendous interest in history and renovation. This project will be a great start to the city's renewed efforts in restoring old structures while also working hard to attract new business and industry.
We believe everyone will be really proud of this project and it will be interesting to watch the work as it progresses. |
