Landmark being renovatedPosted Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at 7:53 PM
I wonder how many people over the years have driven down Main Street in Rector and taken an admiring look at the unusual old building located along the way -- the historic city jail structure.
According to local historian Pauline Crockett, the structure was built in about 1915 and also housed the water department office. It is a very unique building that has the potential to be a real landmark in Rector. The Hamilton-Crockett-Jernigan families were kind enough to donate the building to the city and the plan is to develop it into a community development office and visitor center. It is envisioned that the center will become a real focal point for the community. The city received notice this week that a $25,000 state grant has been received to begin renovation of the structure. The idea is to make the building suitable for an office and visitor center, with the center providing a glimpse into the fascinating history of the community. At the same time, the idea also is retain the historic significance and style of the building. Community development director Cyndi Corkran is extremely excited about the project, not only because she will have her office there, but also because she has a tremendous interest in history and renovation. This project will be a great start to the city's renewed efforts in restoring old structures while also working hard to attract new business and industry. We believe everyone will be really proud of this project and it will be interesting to watch the work as it progresses. |
Ron Kemp and his wife Nancy have published the Clay County Democrat since 1977. They are excited about the new possibilities with the website and the opportunity to give a daily approach to "late-breaking" events in a weekly newspaper operation. Kemp has spent his entire career in the newspaper business and served as president of the Arkansas Press Association in 1993. The Kemps' daughter, Ashley Wimberley, has continued the family tradition, currently serving as director of marketing at the APA office in Little Rock.
